Tigers 4, Orioles 1 – Skubal throws 7 shutout innings, Meadows homers as Tigers beat Orioles 4-1
Tarik Skubal pitched seven shoutout innings, Parker Meadows hit a three-run homer and the Detroit Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-1. Dillon Dingler also homered for the Tigers, who bounced back Thursday night from a 10-1 defeat on Wednesday night to win the deciding matchup of the three-game series. Showing the form that enabled him to unanimously win the 2024 AL Cy Young Award, Skubal (7-2) allowed three hits and permitted just one runner past second base. The lefty struck out six, walked two and lowered his ERA to a sparkling 1.99.

Astros 4, White Sox 3 – Astros triumph 4-3 over White Sox as Paredes homers, Altuve shines with 2 doubles
Isaac Paredes hit a solo homer and Jose Altuve doubled twice with two RBIs to lead the Houston Astros over the Chicago White Sox 4-3. Houston led by two entering the ninth before Mike Tauchman homered to right field off closer Josh Hader to get Chicago within 4-3. Hader struck out Austin Slater to improve to 18 of 18 on save opportunities this season. Framber Valdez (7-4) allowed seven hits and two runs with a season-high 12 strikeouts in five innings. Edgar Quero had three hits and two RBIs and Vargas had two doubles and a triple for the White Sox.

MLB – Tigers lefty Skubal laments 2 walks in otherwise impressive 4-1 win over Orioles
Seven shutout innings. Only three hits allowed, along with two measly walks. Almost every pitcher in the big leagues would be delighted with those results. Not Detroit Tigers lefty Tarik Skubal, who wasn’t fully satisfied with his performance in a 4-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night. Skubal said he got better as the game went along, but he lamented those 2 walks

MLB – Tigers option struggling reliever Beau Brieske to Triple-A Toledo
The Detroit Tigers have optioned reliever Beau Brieske to Triple-A Toledo, one day after the right-hander was hit hard in a 10-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. Brieske gave up five runs, three hits and two walks in 1/3 inning on Wednesday night. The poor outing, which lifted his ERA to 6.55, led to his demotion to the minors on Thursday. Brieske has allowed 16 earned runs, 24 hits and 12 walks in just 22 innings this season. The Tigers recalled lefty Matt Gage to fill out the bullpen.

Leon Draisaitl scored in overtime for the fourth time this playoffs, and the Edmonton Oilers beat the Florida Panthers 5-4 in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final and tie the series, erasing a three-goal deficit and bouncing back from allowing the tying goal in waning seconds of regulation. Jake Walman had initially given the Oilers their first lead with 6:24 left in the third period, before Sam Reinhart scored with 19.5 seconds left to send it to overtime. NBA – Pacers aren’t celebrating, Thunder aren’t panicking as sides reset for Game 4
The Indiana Pacers aren’t celebrating. The Oklahoma City Thunder aren’t panicking. The NBA Finals scoreboard is what it is — Pacers 2, Thunder 1 — going into Game 4 of the best-of-seven title series on Friday night. Everybody can count to four, and everybody can see that Indiana is in a better position right now than Oklahoma City, But the Pacers know if they were to partake in such thinking, that would be dangerous.

Golf – J.J. Spaun leads U.S. Open at Oakmont on a wild day of great shots and shockers
J.J. Spaun is the U.S. Open leader at Oakmont after a relatively calm day compared with everyone else. Spaun played bogey-free for a 66 that matches the lowest opening round for a U.S. Open at Oakmont. He leads by one over Thriston Lawrence. Brooks Koepka is back in the major mix with a 68. So is Jon Rahm at 69. They were among 10 players to break par, so Oakmont was plenty tough. Scottie Scheffler made five bogeys in his round of 73. Rory McIlroy shot a 41 on his second nine and shot 74. Oakmont was as tough as advertised.

Golf – Mi Hyang Lee shoots an 8-under 64 to take a 1-shot lead in the Meijer LPGA Classic

Grace Kim of Australia was a shot back, a year after losing to Lilia Vu in a playoff that also included Lexi Thompson. Fellow Australian Karis Davidson, Akie Iwai of Japan and Sofia Garcia of Paraguay were two strokes behind at 66 in the final event before the major KPMG Women’s PGA Championship next week in Texas. Playing in the morning at tree-lined Blythefield County Club, Lee birdied Nos. 5-8, parred the ninth and eagled the 10th. The 32-year-old player capped the bogey-free round with birdies on Nos. 14 and 17. Thompson shot 68.

NCAA – Democrats criticize latest effort by Congress to regulate college sports
The latest effort by Congress to regulate college sports is generating predictable partisan outrage. Democrats say Republican-led draft legislation would claw back freedoms won by athletes through years of litigation against the NCAA. Three House committees are considering legislation that would create a national standard for name, image and likeness payments to athletes and protect the NCAA against future lawsuits. NCAA President Charlie Baker has said he supports the draft legislation. But there was little indication that any bill advanced by the House would generate enough Democratic support to surpass the 60-vote threshold in the Senate.
