Tigers 5, White Sox 4 – Keith hits tiebreaking double in 8th as Tigers regroup to beat White Sox 5-4
Colt Keith hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the eighth inning to help the major league-leading Detroit Tigers beat the lowly Chicago White Sox 5-4. The Tigers regrouped after blowing a four-run lead and bounced back from an 8-1 pounding the previous day. Wenceel Pérez was ruled safe at second with a leadoff double to center against Brandon Eisert in the eighth after a successful replay challenge by Detroit. He scored with one out on Colt Keith’s bloop double down the left field line that landed just fair beyond a sliding LF Andrew Benintendi’s glove, making it 5-4.

Nationals 2, Cubs 0 – Gore outpitches Boyd as Nationals blank Cubs 2-0 to even series
MacKenzie Gore pitched seven innings of three-hit ball and Amed Rosario homered to break a scoreless tie in the seventh as the Washington Nationals beat the Chicago Cubs 2-0. Nasim Nuñez added an RBI double in the eighth to chase Cubs starter Matthew Boyd, who carried a perfect game into the sixth before walking Nuñez with one out and then giving up a two-out single to rookie Robert Hassell III. Rosario’s third homer — an opposite-field shot into the Washington bullpen in right — came on the first pitch thrown by Boyd in the seventh. Gore has tossed 13 consecutive scoreless innings. He struck out seven, walked one and threw 94 pitches as the Nationals evened the three-game series.

Leon Draisaitl scored on the power play in overtime, Stuart Skinner made 29 saves and the Edmonton Oilers erased a multigoal deficit to beat the defending champion Florida Panthers 4-3 in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final rematch. After Tomas Nosek’s penalty for putting the puck over the glass, Draisaitl’s goal 19:29 into OT sent the home fans into a frenzy and made sure the Oilers would not start this series like they did a year ago, when they fell behind three games to none. Game 2 is Friday night in Edmonton before the series shifts to Sunrise, Florida for Games 3 and 4.

NBA – Pacers coach Rick Carlisle has always had to take the winding road to NBA success
Indiana coach Rick Carlisle is a product of upstate New York. His hometown didn’t even have a way for him to watch NBA games as a kid. The family had to drive to a nearby town to make that happen. And in a land where not a lot of Division I players hail from, Carlisle bucked a trend. He made the big time, made the NBA as a player, made it again as a coach. And now he’s looking to lead the Indiana Pacers to the NBA championship.

NBA – Pacers, Thunder got to the NBA Finals fueled by doubters
In these NBA Finals, a team is four wins away from getting the last laugh. Ask anyone on the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers if they’re still fueled by doubters, and the answer is probably going to be an immediate “yes.” Thunder star and NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander went 11th in his draft. Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton went 12th in his. Both sides have undrafted players in their rotation. Here they are: The NBA Finals, which start Thursday night in Oklahoma City. The Thunder have, by far, the NBA’s best record this season. The Pacers have the league’s second-best record since Jan. 1, including playoffs. And both teams have rolled through the postseason.

NFL – Lions add veteran Trystan Colon to O-Line that lost center Ragnow to retirement
The Detroit Lions have added depth on their depleted offensive line, signing veteran Trystan Colon. Detroit waived/injured cornerback Divaad Wilson on Wednesday to clear a roster spot. The Lions lost their starting center to retirement earlier this week. Four-time Pro Bowler Frank Ragnow called it a career after seven seasons with a slew of injuries. Colon has started at least one game in each of his five NFL seasons. He started in a career-high seven games and played in a career-high 17 games last year with Arizona. Colon played center earlier in his career with Baltimore.

NCAA – New MSU AD J Batt says he’s leading a top-10 department in college sports
J Batt says Michigan State has a top-10 athletic department in the country. The school’s next athletic director made it clear that the football program must lead the way to make his statement ring true. The Spartans have been shaky in recent years in the sport that pays the bills in college athletics, losing seven games last year in coach Jonathan Smith’s debut season. Batt was formally introduced on Wednesday. He joins Michigan State from Georgia Tech, where he was its athletic director since the fall of 2022.

Famed Kronk boxing gym to reopen in Detroit rec center where Joe Louis once trained
The Kronk Gym where Detroit boxing royalty sweated on the road to glory is expected to reopen this summer in a building where the legendary Joe Louis once trained. City leaders and the team behind the project said Wednesday that the Brewster Wheeler Recreation Center will be the gym’s new home. The room that housed the gym where Louis trained remains in the building’s basement. The original Kronk was established in 1971 by trainer Emanuel Steward. Kronk rose to national prominence behind the fists of Thomas “Hitman” Hearns who pummeled the likes of José “Pipino” Cuevas, Wilfred Benítez and Roberto Durán on the way to five titles.
