New legislation just introduced in Lansing seeks to help Jewish people be better protected from antisemitic crimes.
The Michigan Antisemitism Protection Act would amend the Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act to include the definition of antisemitism. Representative Samantha Steckloff of Farmington Hills says antisemitism is at one of its all time highs.
“We haven’t seen this rise since the 1930s, and let me make something very clear about misinformation,” Steckloff said. “There are only 15 million Jews in the entire world. 15 million Jews in the entire world. We don’t even make up a half of a percentage of the population of this world. We can’t do this alone.”
Southfield state Senator Jeremy Moss says antisemitic acts have skyrocketed since the start of the Israel-Hamas war.
