White Sox 8, Tigers 1 – Smith and Taylor help the White Sox cool off the Tigers with an 8-1 victory
Shane Smith pitched three-hit ball into the sixth inning, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 8-1 to stop a four-game slide. Michael A. Taylor homered and drove in four runs for Chicago, which had dropped seven of eight overall. Smith struck out six in 5 1/3 scoreless innings for his first win since April 24. It was the first home win for the White Sox against the Tigers since June 4, 2023. They had lost a franchise-record 11 straight home games versus Detroit. Dillon Dingler hit an RBI double in the seventh to account for the Tigers’ only run.
Cubs 8, Nationals 3 – Busch’s big day propels Cubs to 8-3 win over Nationals
Michael Busch hit his ninth homer of the season, drove in three runs and finished a double shy of the cycle to help the Chicago Cubs to a 8-3 victory over the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night. Nico Hoerner singled in two runs to complete a four-run fifth inning that put Chicago up 7-3. Right-hander Cade Horton allowed three runs over 5 1/3 innings to start Chicago’s nine-game road trip. CJ Abrams, James Wood and Luis García Jr. drove in runs for the Nationals.

NHL – 2025 NHL Stanley Cup Finals – Best of Seven
Tonight
Florida Panthers at Edmonton Oilers, 8:00 p.m. Game 1
NHL – Florida and Edmonton face off in a Stanley Cup Final rematch of NHL powerhouses
The Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers seemed to have been on a collision course to meet again in the Stanley Cup Final. A year since Florida won in seven games to capture the first title in franchise history, there’s an aura of inevitability around the rematch. The question is whether the conclusion of this one will be the Panthers becoming back-to-back NHL champions or Oilers captain Connor McDavid finally hoisting the Cup. Game 1 is Wednesday night at Edmonton.
NBA – Knicks fire coach Tom Thibodeau after first Conference finals berth in 25 years
The New York Knicks have fired coach Tom Thibodeau, just days after their first trip to the Eastern Conference finals in 25 years. The Knicks were eliminated by the Indiana Pacers with a loss in Game 6 on Saturday night. They then decided to move on from Thibodeau, who led them to the postseason in four of his five seasons in New York. The decision was made by team president Leon Rose with approval from owner Jim Dolan, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday.
NBA – Ratings aside; Thunder-Pacers could be a series true basketball fans enjoy
It’s No. 25 Indiana vs. No. 47 Oklahoma City in the NBA Finals. That’s not their seeding. That’s their media market ranking. To some, that might matter. A title matchup that starts Thursday night between the Pacers and Thunder has two young, fun teams that score a ton and are led by marketable stars. That the good news. Here’s the inevitable other side: The ratings, especially at the start of the series, probably aren’t going to be good because the home markets are so small. Those who like the NBA won’t be dissuaded by that. Those who don’t like the NBA will tout it as great failure.
NBA – Seattle SuperSonics fans feel no allegiance to the Thunder in these NBA Finals
It’s logical to think someone like Danny Ball is a fair representation of Seattle these days. Ball, a hoops fan who runs an Instagram account called “Iconic Sonics,” is pulling for the Indiana Pacers over the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Finals. There are no deep ties between Seattle and Indianapolis. But right now, Seattle may as well be an Indy suburb. Seattle fans lost their NBA franchise, the SuperSonics, in 2008 when it was stolen from them and rebranded in Oklahoma City. For the scornful, that means one thing: Go Pacers. The NBA Finals begin Thursday night.

Tennis – Wake up early or stay up late? it’s anyone’s guess what time matches start
Tennis players at Grand Slam tournaments such as the French Open can have to play at 11 a.m. or 8 p.m. or anywhere in between. And sometimes much later than that. Some athletes don’t care what time they play. But some hate having to wake up early. And others hate having to stay up really late. Coco Gauff is one of those who says she doesn’t care what time she plays. The 2023 U.S. Open champion is scheduled to face reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys in an all-American quarterfinal at Roland-Garros at 11 a.m. local time Wednesday.
Tennis – Alcaraz beats a hurting Tommy Paul 6-0, 6-1, 6-4 to return to the semifinals
It’s tough enough for any player to deal with Carlos Alcaraz at the French Open. When you’re not at your absolute best against the defending champion there’s no chance. And that was the case for Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals Tuesday night. No. 2 seed Alcaraz returned to the semifinals at Roland-Garros for the third consecutive year with a 6-0, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Paul. The 12th-seeded Paul had his right thigh heavily taped and was unable to run, serve or hit groundstrokes at full force. Alcaraz will face No. 8 Lorenzo Musetti in the semifinals.
Swimming – Indy to host US Olympic swimming trials again in 2028 after record run
The 2028 U.S. Olympic swimming trials will return to Indianapolis after last year’s event at Lucas Oil Stadium drew record-breaking crowds. USA Swimming officials made the announcement Tuesday in Indianapolis where this year’s national championships are being held this week. Three temporary pools, the 50-meter competition pool and two warm-up pools, will be constructed on top of the NFL’s Colts’ home field. Last year more than 285,000 fans attended the nine-day event, the first ever held inside a football stadium. That attendance total was a 60% increase over previous events. Dates for the team trials have not yet been announced.
Soccer – Sentnor and Biyendolo score 2 each and US women beat Jamaica 4-0
Ally Sentnor and Lynn Biyendolo each scored two goals and the United States beat Jamaica 4-0 after the team honored longtime defender Becky Sauerbrunn. Sentnor scored in the 19th minute then scored her second off a deflection 10 minutes later. Biyendolo scored in the 60th minute, three minutes after coming into the game as a substitute. She added a second in the 88th minute off a cross from Avery Patterson. Phallon Tullis-Joyce made her second consecutive in goal for the United States. Before the game, the United States honored Sauerbrunn, who retired from soccer late last year after a 16-year career.
