Tigers 1, Royals 0 – McKinstry scores on wild pitch and MLB-leading Tigers top Royals 1-0
Zach McKinstry hit a leadoff triple in the third inning and scored on Kris Bubic’s wild pitch to lift the Detroit Tigers over the Kansas City Royals 1-0. Riley Greene had two of Detroit’s five hits as the Tigers bounced back from a 1-0 loss to Kansas City on Saturday that ended their five-game winning streak. They took two of three from their AL Central rivals for their 14th series win this season. Detroit entered June with the best record in the majors for the first time since 2006. Chase Lee got four outs in relief for the win, and Will Vest earned his ninth save. Bubic tied a career high with nine strikeouts in seven innings.

Orioles 3, White Sox 2 – Morton’s solid start propels Orioles past White Sox 3-2 for three-game sweep
Charlie Morton pitched effectively into the seventh inning, and the Baltimore Orioles beat Adrian Houser and the Chicago White Sox 3-2 for their first series sweep of the season. Ramón Urías had two hits and drove in a run for the last-place Orioles, who limited Chicago to five runs in the three games. Baltimore’s three-game winning streak matches its longest of the year. Mike Tauchman homered for the White Sox, who have lost six of seven and fell to 6-26 on the road. Morton gave up one unearned run and six hits over 6 2/3 innings.

Cubs 7, Reds 3 – Michael Busch homers as the Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-3
Michael Busch homered and drove in three runs, helping Jameson Taillon and the Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-3. Pete Crow-Armstrong had three hits, scored three times and swiped two bases as Chicago closed out a 5-1 homestand. Dansby Swanson had a run-scoring double. The Cubs improved to 37-22, moving a season-high 15 games above .500. The NL Central leaders have won 15 of 20 overall. Taillon (5-3) pitched 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball in his third consecutive win. Elly De La Cruz hit a two-run homer for Cincinnati, which dropped two of three against Chicago for the second straight weekend.

Pacers 125, Knicks 108 – Pacers beat Knicks 125-108 to reach NBA Finals for the 2nd time in team history

NBA – The NBA Finals are set: It’ll be Thunder vs. Pacers, starting Thursday night
The seeds for the 2025 NBA Finals began getting planted unknowingly in 2017, when Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was about to enroll at Kentucky and Tyrese Haliburton was getting ready for his senior year of high school. That was the year when the Indiana Pacers traded Paul George to the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Pacers landed Domantas Sabonis out of that deal. The Thunder would trade George in 2019 to the Los Angeles Clippers for a package that included Gilgeous-Alexander. The Pacers would trade Sabonis in 2022 to Sacramento for a package that included Haliburton. And here we are. It’s Pacers vs. Thunder in the NBA Finals, starting Thursday.

NCAA – MSU president advises board to hire Georgia Tech athletic director J Batt
Michigan State University President Kevin Guskiewicz is recommending the school’s board of trustees hire J Batt as athletic director, according to a person familiar with the situation. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Sunday because the president’s hopes of hiring the Georgia Tech athletic director had not been announced. Michigan State is expected to announce Batt is Guskiewicz’s pick as soon as Monday, the person said. With the help of Hall of Fame basketball coach Tom Izzo, the school has been searching for an athletic director for a month.

Golf – Scottie Scheffler joins Tiger Woods as only repeat winners at Memorial
Scottie Scheffler is the Memorial winner for the second year in a row. The world’s No. 1 player delivered another relentless performance. He shot 70 in the final round and turned a decent duel into another runaway. He wound up winning by four shots over Ben Griffin. That makes Scheffler the first back-to-back winner at Memorial since Tiger Woods. Lately his game has looked a lot more like the tournament host Jack Nicklaus. Scheffler now has won three of his last four tournaments. Rickie Fowler had his first top 10 of the year. That got him into the British Open.

Golf – Sweden’s Maja Stark wins the U.S. Women’s Open for her first major championship
Maja Stark of Sweden continued the steady play she demonstrated all week to win the U.S. Women’s Open on Sunday at Erin Hills for her first major championship. Stark shot an even-par 72 to finish at 7-under 281, two strokes ahead of top-ranked Nelly Korda and Japan’s Rio Takeda. Stark earned $2.4 million in the biggest event of the women’s golf season. The 25-year-old Stark became the sixth Swede to win a women’s major, and the first since Anna Nordqvist in the 2021 Women’s British Open. The former Oklahoma State player is the first Swede to win a U.S. Women’s Open since Annika Sorenstam in 2006. Korda closed with a 71, and Takeda had a 72.

IndyCar – Dennis Hauger Runs from Chaos To Win in Detroit, Pad Points Lead
Dennis Hauger quickly figured out the best way to avoid potential and real chaos Sunday in the INDY NXT by Firestone Detroit Grand Prix – stay out front. Pole sitter Hauger, from Norway, led all 45 laps of the race on the streets of downtown Detroit in the No. 28 Rental Group car for his fourth victory in five races this season in the INDYCAR development series. He held off the No. 76 HMD Motorsports car of 2024 series Rookie of the Year Caio Collet by 1.0460 seconds in a one-lap dash for the checkered flag after a restart at the end of Lap 44. Hauger expanded his series lead to 38 points over fellow rookie teammate Lochie Hughes, who is the only other driver to win a race this season.

Tennis – Frances Tiafoe and Tommy Paul put 2 US men in quarters for 1st time since 1996
Frances Tiafoe has defeated Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (4) to reach the French Open quarterfinals for the first time. The 15th-seeded Tiafoe joined 12th-seeded Tommy Paul to put a pair of American men in the round of eight. It’s the first time the country placed more than one man in the quarterfinals in Paris since 1996, when Jim Courier and Pete Sampras did it together. Zero men from the United States had made it this far in any year since Andre Agassi in 2003. And Tiafoe has done it without dropping a set. Tiafoe now plays Lorenzo Musetti. Paul faces Carlos Alcaraz.
