There’s now some clarity from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services when it comes to the future of summer food assistance programs for kids.

The Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer program is a go for the state, offering assistance from June through August. However, Dwayne Haywood with the department says the future of these programs is in doubt due to proposed budget cuts by the federal government.

We don’t know the severity of the cuts to the summer program, but we do know that our SNAP program, what is proposed is going to have significant ramifications and all of which would resonate down to all the programs under the SNAP,” Haywood said. “So, we’re just happy to be delivering the 2025 and we’ll go from 2025 and look for the next summer.”

Benefits will be given as EBT cards that families can use to buy groceries. Families who already have a Bridge card will have a one-time payment of $120 per eligible child.
