Plans are coming together for the development of the new Paddler Park in St. Joseph.
Department of Public Works Director Greg Grothous told city commissioners this week a master plan for the riverside attraction has been in the works since 2022, and goals for the site have included parking, a canoe and kayak launch, and an observation deck over the river. However, Harbor Shores has also made some suggestions, which have now been added to the park master plan.
“With the addition of a restroom/storage building in place of the port-a-john, additional docks for boats, and increased parking utilizing the Upton Drive right-of-way,” Grothouse said. “Harbor Shores has offered to fund the development of the park. The city plans to apply for a grant through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and Harbor Shores will serve as the match for the project.”
Grothouse says so far, there is no funding allocated for the project, so this is just the beginning.
Paddler Park is located at 213 Upton Drive, the site of the old city water tower. The city wants it to become a popular place for kayakers to launch. Grothous said developments at the park are being planned in coordination with adjacent property owners.
Commissioners signed off on the Harbor Shores proposal.
