Lory’s Place spinning off from Corewell Health

This is a big year for Lory’s Place, a bereavement services organization based in St. Joseph.

Lory’s Place offers support for grieving adults, children, and families in Southwest Michigan, and currently, it falls under the umbrella of Corewell Health. Lory’s Place board member Mike Wyble tells us, however, that won’t be the case much longer. Lory’s Place is in the process of becoming independent from Corewell.

Corwell is so large and they have their own mission and it doesn’t just fit with where we’re at,” Wyble said. “So, it’ll be more efficient for us. And I think one of the things that has been important, because Laurie’s Place started 20 years ago at the death of Dr. Lory Schults, and so from there, it was a community organization that started from grassroots within the community.”

This change, Wyble says, will make Lory’s Place feel like more of a community organization, as was originally intended.

Wyble says Lory’s Place and Corewell will still be partners, but Lory’s Place is now securing 501(c)(3) status to be a non-profit. He thanked Congressman Bill Huizenga’s office for helping with that.
