South Haven Council supporting city manager amid search for police chief

South Haven city leaders are asking residents to accept the leadership of the city council and manager as the search for a new police chief continues.

The city hired Dennis Honholt, the chief of police in Dover, Tennessee, to come on as South Haven Police Chief in April. However, he later resigned after it was learned he never quit his previous job in Tennessee. That was an embarrassment for South Haven, and the city later announced longtime Sergeant Adam DeBoer would serve as interim chief through at least the end of the summer. At that time, the city will begin another search for a permanent chief.

South Haven City Council members Wendi Onuki and Mary Hosley last week requested a special meeting to talk about the situation with City Manager Kate Hosier, and although the meeting was closed, Hosley tells us council found what Hosier told them to be acceptable. She says the ultimate decision of hiring a chief belongs to Hosier, and the council must support her and move forward.

Hosley says anyone with questions should send them to Hosier and forward them to the council if they wish.

In the past year, South Haven has had six police chiefs, including three interim appointments and two permanent appointees who served a month or less.
