Set for this Saturday is a gathering that’s become a tradition in Benton Harbor. It’s the annual Kite Flying Event.

Speaking to colleagues this week, Benton Harbor City Commissioner Edward Isom said he and Abisayo Muhammad, the wife of Mayor Marcus Muhammad, will host the community at Alumni Field, in the 600 block of Union Avenue behind Discount Tire, to fly kites.

First Lady Muhammad’s been doing this for nine years, pulling this off,” Isom said. “We have a new location this year we’re gonna be at. It’s the practice field by Discount Tire. We’ve got a bigger space because we want more children, more adults to come fly a kite. I want this commission to come fly a kite. I was thinking about bringing each one of you a kite because you need to fly one just to let some stuff go.”

The event is just a fun, relaxing way for people to get together. It was previously held at the Southwest Michigan Regional Airport, but Isom said the new location will allow for more kite flyers.

Anyone who wants to go fly a kite up to the highest height and send it soaring can join in from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
