Charges have been dropped against an activist at the University of Michigan who was taken into custody during a protest.
The months-long legal battle is now over after the “die in” protest held a year ago. It was a pro-Palestinian demonstration calling for the university to divest from Israel.
Attorney Amir Makled says the protest was nonviolent, but protester Lewis was tackled by officers.
“The campus safety police came in and and started arresting and shooing away all these these activists and and student protesters that were involved in that and three of them were charged with crimes,” Makled said. “My client was charged with a felony. This is different than the encampment that happened in May of 2024.”
Makled says video and eyewitness accounts show the protest remained peaceful. Lewis was initially charged with a misdemeanor.
