Memorial Day weekend is almost here, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has some reminders for everyone to be safe and avoid causing problems at state parks.
DNR parks and recreation chief Ron Olson tells us parks and campgrounds that were closed due to the March ice storm in the northern Lower Peninsula are all back open. He’s expecting a busy camping weekend.
“We’re right now sitting at about 95, 96% occupancy, which is very, very good,” Olson said. “That’s one of the tops occupancy rates on Memorial Day that we’ve had in a long time, probably could be close to a record.”
Olson says campers should be careful not to start wildfires by making sure campfires are fully out. The way to do it is to pour water on the fire, stir it, pour more water, and then stir it again. Put your hands over the fire ring to make sure it doesn’t feel hot.
If you’re thinking about swimming, remember something.
“The water temps are still in the 40s in Lake Michigan, so if you’re planning on going in the lake, be very mindful of the fact that at that temperature, you can get overcome with cold that could lead to hypothermia and things like that,” Olson said.
Olson says inland lakes may be warmer, but Lake Michigan is probably too cold to swim in at this time. He also reminds ORV riders to stay on the right side of the trail, avoid alcohol, and slow down.
As for boaters, all are reminded to wear life jackets. Also, everyone’s reminded to prevent the spread of invasive species by not transporting firewood and washing off your boat before moving it.
