The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety has had a busy few days after it responded to two fires, one of which it calls suspicious, and a large illegal gathering.
The department says the first fire was reported around midnight Sunday and started as a vehicle fire in the 200 block of May Street. Firefighters arrived to find it had spread to a house and fence. While the blaze was put out, the department says it left behind heavy damage.
The second fire was reported around 3 a.m. Sunday at a vacant home at 877 Nate Wells Senior Drive. Although the fire was quickly extinguished, firefighters say it is considered suspicious in nature. The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety was assisted at the scene by the St. Joseph Department of Public Safety and the Benton Township Fire Department.
There were no injuries in either incident.
Police have not released details about the illegal gathering they broke up, but say it was “very large.”
