The Michigan House has approved nine bills that set standards for school security and mental health services in public schools.

The plan began after the 2021 Oxford High School shooting with a task force that created proposals based on advice from parents, educators, and police. Republican state Representative Mike Harris said it’s not a one size fits all approach.

We want to wrap this up, get it to where it needs to be, and then again, reevaluate this thing every year,” Harris said. “Are there more things that can be done? 100%. But I really want us to get this across the finish line.”

Among other things, the bills will require regular updating of emergency response plans and safety training for resource officers and all school staff.
