Huizenga: a lot of work to get the budget approved

Conservatives have blocked President Donald Trump’s big tax breaks and spending cuts bill.

House Republicans failed Friday to push it out of the Budget Committee. Four GOP conservatives initially voted against it, demanding further cuts to Medicaid and green energy tax breaks. A fifth switched his vote in a procedural step so it could be reconsidered later and says he’s confident they’ll “get this done.”

The failure of Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” to get through that procedural vote came as a surprise to many. Congressman Bill Huizenga says it certainly was a setback.

We’ve got a lot ahead of us, no doubt, but this is vital,” Huizenga said on Facebook Friday. “If we don’t get this done, the per-child tax credit gets cut in half. It’s going to affect 40 million working families, 40 million of them. We’re going to see tax rates jump like we’ve never seen. Yet, a lot of us are very concerned about where we are going on the expansion of government yet. And so, this is some tough decisions that have to be made.”

Tallying a whopping 1,116 pages, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act is teetering at a critical moment. At the same time, lawmakers from high-tax states including New York are demanding a deeper local tax deduction.

Democrats call the package “bad economics.” The Budget Committee plans to try again Sunday.

Meanwhile, Huizenga says Trump may need to get more involved in the process.
