Lawmakers looking into low morale at Michigan State Police

After a survey showed low morale among Michigan State Police, state Representative Mike Mueller, a former sheriff’s deputy, started looking into it.

Mueller gave a presentation before the House Oversight Committee this week, saying there’s a toxic leadership culture at the state police.

If you don’t have good leadership, you’re going to fail to act,” Mueller said. “I’ve been in critical incidences, and the nice thing is, I always worked for people. I worked in Washtenaw County, I worked in Livingston County. I’ve worked under numerous sheriffs. And each one of them, even though, again, you have your internal problems, but we knew that we were allowed to do our job. When you start second guessing yourself when you’re out there, you die.”

Some on the committee suggest that state police management testify before the committee.
