Lawmakers in the Michigan House and Senate want water safety to be included in school curriculum.

State Representative Donni Steele has introduced a bill to require the Michigan Department of Education to create a water safety program for kids. It would help teach them how to stay safe and be responsible in our lakes, rivers, ponds, and pools.

“Basically through health class that they learn about flotation devices, awareness of water conditions, supervising under swimming areas, safety behaviors around the water,” Steele said.

With that knowledge, Steele hopes it saves lives.

The bill has been referred to the Committee on Education and Workforce.
