More of us will be traveling over the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.
1.3 million Michiganders will travel at least 50 miles for Memorial Day. That’s a jump of 37,000 from last year and the second highest number on record. Nationwide, AAA expects more than 45.1 million to travel for the holiday weekend.
AAA’s Aixa Diaz urges people who are thinking of hitting the road to leave as early as possible to avoid traffic headaches.
“What we have seen post-COVID is this shift toward experiences for people, families and friends,” Diaz said. “They want to get together and they want to do things together.”
Fortunately, a trip to the gas pump should be lower than last year. On Memorial Day 2024, the national average for a gallon of regular was $3.59 per gallon. In Michigan it was $3.66 per gallon.
So far this spring, gas prices have avoided the usual seasonal spikes, largely due to lower crude oil costs.
