DNR to drivers: watch out for turtles

There’s a new message to drivers from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

The DNR says it’s turtle migration season and it’s asking drivers to safely avoid hitting turtles as they cross the road.

There are 10 native turtle species in Michigan. Three are listed as threatened. One is of special concern. The DNR says the margin on adult turtle populations is so slim that a 6% annual mortality rate is often enough to threaten sustainability and push populations toward extinction.

The DNR wants Michiganders to safely avoid hitting turtles while driving, but never veer or swerve into another lane.

If you are moving a turtle off the road, set it down in the direction it was headed, or it could try to cross the road a second time.
