Benton Township considering zoning ordinance review

Leaders in Benton Township are going to be taking a look at the township’s zoning ordinance.

At this week’s regular meeting of the Benton Township Board of Trustees, building official Loyall Bennett said the planning commission is recommending a study of the 1999 ordinance.

This is to give us a technical review and the insight to update it to current standards,” Bennett said.

Bennett said the current rules are out of date and could use a refresh.

We’ve had a couple of ZBA actions for sign height and hotel height. So, we’re going to try and roll all of these changes into a new zoning ordinance that is for 2025.”

The zoning ordinance governs what kind of developments are allowed in different areas of the township. It also covers, as mentioned, things like the kinds of signs that are permitted.

A recent example of a variance being granted was the sign for the Chick Fil A. It stands at 60 feet, while the ordinance limited signs in that area to 40 feet.

Township trustees Tuesday authorized the planning commission to seek a quote to determine the cost of crafting a new ordinance.
