If you happen to see a lot of flashing lights and a fire at the South Bend International Airport on Monday, there’s no reason to be alarmed. They’re only doing a training exercise.

The St. Joseph County Airport Authority Department of Public Safety will be conducting annual fire training, as required by the Federal Aviation Administration, with live burns from around 8 a.m. through noon. The exercise will take place at the live fire training facility on the northwest corner of the airfield at South Bend International Airport.

The airport tells us the public safety department’s 12 members will all take part in putting out fires to sharpen their skills. Chief Mike Ornat says safety is held to the highest standard across all sectors at the airport, and the training helps his team stay on top of its game.

Those driving by the airport may notice the activity. Also, those going to the airport need not worry. The airport says the training will not impact affect flight operations.
