President Donald Trump’s 2026 budget plan would slash non-defense domestic spending by $163 billion, while increasing expenditures on national security. That’s according to statements released by the White House on Friday.
Meanwhile, Congress continues hammering out “the big, beautiful bill” to get all of Trump’s budget wants and tax cuts done. Congressman Bill Huizenga told us how the process is working.
“The budget committee has gone in and passed instructions onto all of the various committees of jurisdiction,” Huizenga said. “So, for example, in our Financial Services Committee, we were instructed to go find a minimum of a billion dollars in savings. We actually went and found five.”
Congressman Tim Walberg, the chair of the House Committee on Education and Workforce, tells us the process of cutting that budget went smoothly.
“We were successful on Tuesday to meet and exceed our target amount that we’ve been given of $330 billion of savings,” Walberg said. “We ended up with $351 billion of savings. We brought it out in a relatively quick fashion, which surprised me.”
Democrats tried to oppose many of the cuts, but that didn’t matter.
Walberg says a lot of the savings were possible thanks to changes being made to student loan programs. We’ll have more details on those in the coming days.
Huizenga and Walberg say Democratic claims about massive cuts to programs that affect ordinary Americans are just fear mongering. For example, Huizenga says talk about cutting Head Start is just “speculation,” and he believes the “core directives” of the vast majority of federal programs will be protected.
