May marks National Bike Month, and AAA of Michigan is reminding bicyclists and drivers alike how to watch out for each other out on the roads.
AAA Spokesperson Adrienne Woodland tells us the most important thing a bicyclist can do is wear a helmet.
“Helmets, when properly worn, are up to 85% effective at protecting the head and brain in the event of a crash,” Woodland said. “As a bicyclist, you also want to follow the rules of the road, obey traffic signals, signs and lane markings, ride on the right side of the road and never against traffic.”
Woodland says bicyclists should also be sure to ride where drivers can see them and never wear headphones. As for drivers, she says it’s important to always be aware of what’s around you and to give bicyclists room.
“Allow at least three feet of clearance when passing a bicyclist. Be patient. You want to avoid honking or aggressive driving near cyclists. And remember that they have the same rights to the road as vehicles do.”
Woodland also reminds drivers to be especially cautious near children on bikes because those kids can be unpredictable.
In 2023, 1,166 bicyclists were killed in traffic crashes around the country. Another estimated 49,489 bicyclists were injured, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
