A St. Joseph man who was killed Wednesday in a Benton Township crash has been identified as a popular instructor at Lake Michigan College.

Jay Keeler just finished up this semester of classes at LMC ahead of this weekend’s commencement. We’re told by Lake Michigan College it’s been a somber mood there since word was received about his death in a crash on East Empire Avenue between Yore Avenue and Highpoint Drive, near the college.

The Benton Township Police Department says Keeler’s Toyota Rav 4 crossed the centerline and struck a pickup. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and the reason why he lost control of his vehicle is still under investigation.

Lake Michigan College President Trevor Kubatzke has issued a statement, saying, “Jay was part of our academic community for many years, and his presence in the classroom shaped the experiences of many students.” Kubatzke says Keeler’s passing “is a reminder of the connections we all share as members of this community,” adding “Jay’s absence will be felt by those who worked alongside him and by the many students whose educational paths crossed his.”

Below is Kubatzke’s full statement:

“Our thoughts are with Jay’s family, students, and colleagues as we process this unexpected loss,” said Dr. Trevor A. Kubatzke, President of Lake Michigan College. “Jay was part of our academic community for many years, and his presence in the classroom shaped the experiences of many students.”

During his time at LMC, Jay taught with a strong sense of structure and purpose. He believed in challenging students to think critically. His commitment to his students and to lifelong learning was clear, and he played a meaningful role in the college’s educational mission.

His passing is a reminder of the connections we all share as members of this community. Every individual leaves a mark on the people and the place around them. Jay’s absence will be felt by those who worked alongside him and by the many students whose educational paths crossed his.”
