Residents of Van Buren County now have a new way to keep their community clean with the launch of the Decatur Area Waste and Recycling Center.
Recently opened by the Van Buren Conservation District in partnership with Hamilton Township, Decatur Township, and the village of Decatur, the facility offers year-round access for bulk trash disposal and recycling drop-off.
Recycling and Materials Management Coordinator Kalli Marshall tells us that this center provides a responsible way for residents to dispose of waste instead of dumping it in ditches or waterways.
“We’re hoping that this offers people access to get rid of the trash, not leaving it on the side of the road, giving those recycling access to get those materials out of our landfill,” Marshall says.
What items are accepted?
“Cardboard, paper, plastic bottles and container as well as glass,” Marshall says. “We also are accepting tires from any Van Buren residents. We’re allowing those folks to have a place anytime to take it to them instead of waiting for one day events.”
Residents from Decatur Township, the village of Decatur, and Hamilton Township can drop off items for free. Furthermore, any Van Buren County resident can dispose of trash or recycling at the center for a small fee.
The facility is open to the public on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
