Corewell Health is planning to build some new apartments in St. Joseph.
St. Joseph Community Development Director Kristen Gundersen tells us Corewell is seeking to add a new building with about 56 dwellings next to the Lookout Point complex on Lakeshore Drive near Hawthrone Avenue. The new building will be to the north of the existing three buildings, at 3363 Lakeshore.
With housing being in short supply around Berrien County, it comes as no surprise there’s movement on an addition to the Lookout Point complex. Just in February, Corewell announced it’s building 125 units in Grand Rapids.
In a statement, Corewell says it’s developing the 56 additional units in St. Joe to “ease housing challenges and meet the needs of our growing medical residency programs.” It says the “expansion, anticipated to be completed by summer 2026, will provide medical residents additional options for housing during their residency training.”
Corewell says it expects “these apartment units will support continued recruitment efforts to bring new providers to our area.”
Gundersen tells us the property on Lakeshore was just rezoned in preparation for the new apartments last year. So far, they’ve cleared the site and are preparing to start construction soon.
Corewell’s full statement is below:
“To ease housing challenges and meet the needs of our growing medical residency programs, we are constructing 56 new apartment units directly adjacent to the Lookout Point apartment complex in St. Joseph. This expansion, anticipated to be completed by summer 2026, will provide medical residents additional options for housing during their residency training. We anticipate these apartment units will support continued recruitment efforts to bring new providers to our area.”
