The Michigan State Police wants to remind drivers to practice safe driving habits during the winter season.

MSP Fifth District Lieutenant DuWayne Robinson tells us it’s important for drivers to pay attention on the roads during inclement weather in order to keep everyone safe.

“Slow it down, increase your following distance, and easy on those breaks,” Robinson says. “Just get to your destination safe and sound for the sake of all of us that are out there using our roadways.”

Robinson says drivers to maintain a safe speed and be aware of the road conditions before you get behind the wheel.

“Do what you need to do to maintain control of your vehicle because you can’t control others bad behavior as it relates to driving,” Robinson says. “Make sure you’re wearing your seatbelt, of course, have your lights on so they can see you. Just do all the things that you know to do to maintain control of that vehicle that you’re driving.”

Drivers should also winterize their vehicles in case of an emergency situation, which includes keeping a flash light, blanket, and other necessary items.
