The city of South Haven has appointed Mr. Kevin Swope as its new police chief, effective January 6, 2025.
Swope brings 26 years of law enforcement experience, most recently serving as chief of police in Dearborn Heights. He says he is looking forward to moving to Southwest Michigan.
“I wanted to get some experience in a smaller community, but a different community,” Swope says. “One that sees populations swell over the summer and then it gets down to a smaller population in the winter. A totally different policing style. I want to be more involved in a smaller community because I can really make an impact.”
He has previously worked as a lieutenant, sergeant, and patrol officer at the Westland Police Department and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbia Southern University.
“I want people to know that I really focus on making sure that everyone is treated fairly,” Swope says. “Constitutional policing is a big deal to me. Really listening to people, active listening, and seeing what problems and what concerns that residents have. I just want them to know that I truly care for people.”
City Manager Kate Hosier expressed confidence in Swope’s ability to lead, citing his experience with diverse communities and strong policy focus.
Swope succeeds Natalie Thompson, who retired in September.
Hosier also thanked Sergeant Pat Carlotto for his service as interim chief.
