High fire risk in Michigan right now

Michigan’s fire danger is high, thanks to our unseasonably warm and dry fall.

According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, there were 26 fires last week, covering 170 acres, across the Lower and Upper Peninsulas.

DNR fire prevention specialist Paul Rogers says dry falls like this are very uncommon.

It happens every three to four years that we get an extended drying period like this into the fall,” Rogers said. “So, we’ve had a severe lack of rain for almost 30 days now. We’ve gotten some on and off, but we just haven’t gotten the normal amount.”

The state urges people to look for burn bans before burning yard debris. Also, be extra cautious with power equipment, off-road vehicles, and campfires.
