Richard Erick Waldhouse, born on December 10, 1954, in California, passed away Thursday, September 26, 2024, in Niles, Michigan. His life was a vibrant tapestry woven with devotion to his family, service to his country, and a passionate engagement with the natural world around him.
Richard’s early years set the foundation for a life characterized by resilience and a strong sense of duty. His parents, Gordon and Phyllis Waldhouse, both of whom preceded him in death, instilled in him the values of hard work and commitment. After graduating from high school, Richard proudly joined the United States Marines, where he served with honor and distinction. His work ethic followed him into civilian life, where he worked in maintenance at Enron and later found his calling as a heating and cooling technician—a role in which he excelled and brought comfort to many.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Richard was a family man at heart. He leaves behind a loving wife, Anita Waldhouse, with whom he shared countless cherished moments. His daughter, Monica Walk, will always remember him as a guiding light in her life. His brother, Martin (and wife Karen) Waldhouse, and his sister, LaVada (and husband John) Hook, will miss his spirited conversations and the laughter they shared. Richard’s legacy continues through his three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, who will grow up hearing tales of their grandfather’s interesting and loving nature.
Richard’s interests painted the picture of a man who found joy in the simple pleasures of life. An avid nature lover, he could often be found sitting outside, watching the squirrels, deer, and turkey that frequented his yard. At one point, his love for aquatic life led him to own over 100 aquariums, finding tranquility in the silent dance of fish. His adventurous spirit shone through in his love for riding his motorcycle, a hobby that provided him with both freedom and reflection.
Those who knew Richard will remember his sweet tooth, a trait that made him impossible to resist cookies and pies. His hands were rarely idle, as he enjoyed chopping wood, a pastime that extended into a skill for carpentry. Richard’s curious mind also led him to spend a significant amount of time on YouTube, where he indulged in his diverse interests and learned new crafts and he enjoyed many a western.
Despite his sometimes gruff exterior, Richard was the biggest teddy bear to those close to him. His heart was as open and warm as the fires he stoked in his woodwork. He was spirited in his conversations, loving in his actions, and endlessly interesting in his pursuits.
