Michigan State Police will be teaming up with police agencies across Michigan this month for a Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.
From Friday, August 16 through September 2, there will be increased patrols and messaging spread about the dangers of driving impaired. MSP Fifth district Lieutenant DuWayne Robinson out of Paw Paw tells us state police hope drivers will be mindful of their drinking and have a plan to get home.
“Whenever someone’s out driving under the influence, all of us are at risk,” Robinsons said. “We all just want to get to our destination safely, get to our families and friends, and live to see another day.”
In Michigan, the busy Labor Day weekend is a time for late-summer trips, but also one of the deadliest times of the year in terms of impaired driving. Troopers will be on the lookout for drivers under the influence of drugs and alcohol throughout the enforcement period.
“We’re not out here harassing people. We really are out here trying to educate the public. That’s why we’re putting out this message well ahead of time to get people thinking about this, so you are not that person that gets pulled over and arrested.”
Robinson says the penalties for drunk driving can include the loss of a driver’s license, greatly increased insurance costs, and jail.
