A veteran from Holland is walking around Lake Michigan for the sixth year this week to raise awareness about veteran suicide and mental health.
37-year-old Travis Snyder has struggled with depression and has a message for anyone suffering.
“That you’re not alone, that you’re far from the only person, that if you get help, you’re not taken away from anybody else, that there’s a community of people here that care about you and believe that you have a purpose in this world, and that you still have a lot to offer this world if you’re struggling,” Snyder said.
Snyder, a Marine vet, says about 22 veterans commit suicide every day.
Snyder began his walk at the Michigan-Indiana border and will finish in Mackinaw City on August 20.
