Benton Township Police to give steering wheel locks to some drivers

The Benton Township Police Department is offering free steering wheel locks to the drivers of Kias and Hyundais who have had their cars stolen.

Chief Greg Abrams tells us those two car brands are stolen the most and he wanted to find a way to protect residents.

When the Kia and Hyundai thefts really started rising, I wanted to do something about it,” Abrams said. “It was just itching me just to figure out how to help families keep their vehicles. It just doesn’t make sense that you have someone stealing a car that a working person needs to take their children to school, get groceries for their grandmother, get to doctor visits and things like that.”

Kia and Hyundais topped the list of most stolen cars in the United States last year. The reasons have to do with the type of ignition systems they have.

Abrams says he’s ordered steering wheel locks that are on their way now, and township residents who have reported their cars stolen in the past will be contacted by the department. They can get a free voucher to pick up a lock at an O’Reilly’s Auto Parts. The locks should be available in a few weeks.
