The St. Joseph Public Schools Board of Education is asking voters to renew two school millages in the November election.
The first is the non-homestead operating millage, which allows the school to operate. The district is seeking a five-year renewal for the millage. Chief financial officer Brenda Graham says the millage is crucial.
“That’s our 18 mils that we collect, and if we didn’t collect, we would be in a world of hurt because we collect about $7 million of our funding for our operations from this, which that pays for salaries and benefits and supplies,” Graham said.
The second millage is for the building and site sinking fund. That millage helps collect funds for building improvements and repairs. The district is only seeking a renewal.
“That’s a renewal to collect for the things that we do for anything from carpeting and to the roofing and to the various things. We collect about a million dollars of that each year.”
The school board on Monday voted 5-0 to include the millage renewals on the November 2024 ballot.
