Hot weather in Southwest Michigan to continue into the weekend

Wednesday was the third of extreme heat in Michigan with more than four million people under an Excessive Heat Warning.

While Michiganders are technically under the infamous heat dome, National Weather Service meteorologist Steven Freitag says the boundaries of this week’s dome are not well-defined. The most extreme heat was expected in the Ohio Valley and the northeast.

This is basically a large upper level ridge that builds and that leads to substance and compressional heating,” Freitag said. “That’s how you get the hot temperatures during the day. This ridge sort of struggled and is mostly centered east of our area. Toledo did hit 99 degrees Tuesday, setting a record. So there certainly was that potential to hit the mid to upper 90s, but we’ve got the clouds and storms which are keeping temps just slightly cooler.”

The hot weather is expected to linger in Southwest Michigan through the weekend. The high temperature on Saturday is expected to be 90, and then we’ll likely get some storms Saturday night.
