Rangers 9, Tigers 1 – Ureña’s perfect-game bid ends with homer but Rangers top Detroit 9-1 to avoid a sweep
Texas starter José Ureña had a perfect game through six innings when recent Detroit callup Justyn-Henry Malloy homered for his first major league hit, but the Rangers beat the Tigers 9-1 on Wednesday night. Ureña (2-5) retired the first 15 batters before Malloy led off by hitting a 95-mph sinker 413 feet to left-center field on a 3-1 pitch. Malloy was called up from Triple-A Toledo on Monday. David Robertson and Kirby Yates finished Texas’ combined two-hitter. Jonah Heim and Josh Smith both had three hits with a homer and two RBI for the Rangers, who salvaged the finale of the three-game series. Detroit Tigers right-hander Kenta Maeda left his road start against the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night after throwing two pitches because of right-side abdominal discomfort.

Cubs 7, White Sox 6 – Tauchman hits a game-ending homer as the Cubs hand the White Sox their 13th straight loss
Mike Tauchman hit a game-ending homer, and the Chicago Cubs handed the Chicago White Sox their 13th consecutive loss with a 7-6 victory. Tauchman drove Michael Kopech’s second pitch in the ninth — a 98.4 mph fastball — deep to center for his fifth of the season. It was his first career game-ending homer. The Cubs got back to .500 with their third victory in four games. The White Sox have led by at least two runs at one point in each of their last five losses. The 13-game slide is the longest in the majors this year and matches the single-season franchise record set in 1924.

NBA – Redemption-minded Celtics set to match up with opportunistic Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks and Boston Celtics prepare to tip off the NBA Finals and the four biggest names in the series are looking at this moment through different lenses. Boston’s Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are the Celtics’ most tenured and scrutinized stars and see it as a chance at redemption after falling short in the Finals just two seasons ago and then failing to return last year. Dallas’ Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving see it as their first opportunity to make good on a partnership that began late last season after Irving was traded from Brooklyn following a tumultuous run of two-plus seasons with the Nets.

WNBA – WNBA rescinds second technical foul that was assessed to Angel Reese
The WNBA announced that it’s rescinded the second technical foul on Chicago rookie Angel Reese that occurred with 2:31 left in the loss to the New York Liberty on Tuesday night. Reese was thrown out of the game after receiving two technical fouls following a brief interaction with official Charles Watson. The rookie forward appeared to say something to Watson and then quickly waved her hand. Head official Maj Forsberg said in a pool report that Reese’s technical fouls were for “disrespectfully addressing” the official and then for “waving her hand in dismissal.” Reese finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
WNBA – Sky players say team was harassed by man at Washington hotel
Chicago Sky players say a man with a camera harassed the team when it arrived at a hotel in Washington on Wednesday. General manager Jeff Pagliocca told the Chicago Sun-Times the man was trying to talk to guard Chennedy Carter. He said the team’s security quickly diffused the situation and the police were not called. But multiple players described the incident on X.
Pro athletes know gambling on their games is non-negotiable. Some learn the hard way
Professional athletes get told at the start of every season that if they gamble on their games, the consequences are severe. This spring they’ve gotten a more personal reminder, with both the NBA and Major League Baseball banning players for life. Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano was permanently banned this week for betting on games he was involved in. The NBA banished Raptors forward Jontay Porter in April. Other players say they should have known better. Marcano was the first active baseball player in a century banned for life for gambling. MLB said he placed hundreds of bets totaling more than $150,000 on baseball in 2022 and 2023.
Golf – Schauffele now a major champion at Memorial and facing a big stretch of golf
Xander Schauffele was able to take a few weeks off after claiming his first major at the PGA Championship. He came to realize he’s still the same person and his life hasn’t changed. Now he returns to the Memorial to face a tough stretch of golf. The Memorial is a signature event with a top field and big purse. Then it’s off to the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 and then another signature event at the Travelers Championship. Tournament host Jack Nicklaus isn’t thrilled with a new date for the Memorial that pushes it right up against a major.
Tennis – Mirra Andreeva reaches the French Open semis; will face Jasmine Paolini
Mirra Andreeva, a 17-year-old unseeded Russian, has defeated No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka at the French Open to reach the semifinals. Andreeva became the youngest Grand Slam semifinalist since 16-year-old Martina Hingis in 1997 with her 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4 victory Wednesday. Andreeva is ranked 38th. On Thursday, she will face 12th-seeded Jasmine Paolini, a 28-year-old from Italy who also reached her first major semifinal. She was a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 winner against No. 4 seed Elena Rybakina, the Wimbledon champion two years ago. The other women’s semifinal matchup is No. 1 Iga Swiatek against No. 3 Coco Gauff, who both won quarterfinals Tuesday. Alexander Zverev reached the men’s semifinals.
NCAAFB – Michigan starts Walk-On Fund as athletic departments scrambling for money
Michigan-based collective Champions Circle has created a Walk-On Fund as athletic departments scramble for money before revenue is shared directly with athletes. The collective announced Wednesday it created the fund for University of Michigan student-athletes who pay for their tuition. While college football teams are limited to 85 scholarships, some players are without athletic-related financial aid. Athletic departments across the country have been bracing for seismic changes, stemming in part from the NCAA and the nation’s five biggest conferences announcing last month that they have agreed to pay nearly $2.8 billion to settle a host of antitrust claims.
