This fall will mark the 50th anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior. To commemorate the wreck, a 17 stage, 411-mile relay swim from Lake Superior to Detroit will begin in late July.
Jim Dreyer, a Great Lakes swimmer, is the organizer.
“Every swim will be a long day for every one of these swimmers,” Dreyer said. “The event will take over a month because we’re actually scheduling a day off between each of the 17 stages just for weather. I mean, certainly on the Great Lakes, as everybody knows, the weather’s gonna be very unpredictable and those are the challenges that make this exciting.”
Dreyer has swam across all five of the Great Lakes.
Those interested in taking part in the relay can register at EdmundFitzgeraldMemorialSwim.com beginning June 10.
The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald took the lives of 29 crew members on November 10, 1975.
