The new splash pad being built in Coloma will be named in honor of the late Norma Jean Somers, a community leader who served the city for decades.

At this week’s meeting of the Coloma City Commission, it was announced the splash pad will officially be called the Norma Jean Somers Splash Pad at Randall Park.

The project is a result of the master plan adopted in May of 2021. Efforts to raise funds for the pad were announced in March of last year, with a cost estimate of between $165,000 and $200,000. So far, $131,000 has been raised for the project with none of it being taxpayer money.

The city of Coloma says Norma Jean Somers died in April of 2023. She was a force in the community, serving on the Coloma Community School Board for 20 years, serving on the Community Hospital Board, and helping secure funding for the Coloma Community Library. The city has teamed up with her family to further support the splash pad project and honor Norma with the splash pad name.

Fundraising to complete the pad continues.
