All of Michigan could see the northern lights tonight.
Michael Narlock is head of astronomy at the Cranbrook Institute of Science. He’s hoping the weather cooperates so everyone can see the breathtaking lights.
“That’s always a gamble for us here in Michigan, but if it’s clear out, we could see a lot of auroral activity,” Narlock said. “And what that means basically is, over the past few days, there’s an area on the sun located around this really big sunspot that has been throwing particles out into the solar system. They’re called coronal mass ejections.”
Narlock says it’s hard to predict when the northern lights will appear, making them rare. He says people who really want to see them should drive to an area with less light pollution, like out in the country.
