Be on the lookout starting this weekend for volunteers picking up litter along Michigan roads as part of the state’s Adopt A Highway campaign.
The Michigan Department of Transportation’s Dan Weingarten says the cleanup campaign saves taxpayers a lot of money.
“Just based on the number of hours that people are out there, it’s something like a $5 million value annually for the state, picking up 60,000 to 70,000 bags of trash annually,” Weingarten said. “So, it’s a huge amount of work that’s done, and that’s money that can then be spent by MDOT on other maintenance priorities like clearing brush.”
Weingarten says volunteers will be picking up trash along roads in lower Michigan starting this Saturday and running through April 21. The cleanup in the U.P. runs May 18 through the 26.
Volunteer groups will be recognized on signs posted along the adopted stretch of adopted highway.
