The Michigan State Police Fraud Investigation Team is warning everyone of an online banking scam that has been seen lately in southwest Michigan.

The MSP says the fraud was first discovered in the region in November and members of banks and credit unions have been falling for it at an alarming rate. That happens when they click on spoofed text messages claiming to be from their bank or credit union.

Suspects are gaining access to the member’s bank account after members click on the fraudulent text message containing a link that directs them to a fake website that looks identical to their normal financial institution’s website. Members are unknowingly logging into the fake website with their username, password, and security questions, thus providing the information to scammers. From there, the victim’s funds are wired out of the account to the fraudsters.

State police say if you receive any suspicious text messages appearing to be from your bank or credit union, don’t respond or click on any displayed links. Instead, contact your financial institution directly if you have any questions.
