More state money is coming to Benton Harbor Schools to provide additional support to children and improve learning outcomes.

That’s according to the Michigan Department of Education who says fourteen Michigan school districts are receiving more than $3.2 million in grants.

A news release from MDE says the money is part of the Communities In Schools grants program that will place full-time student support coordinators in each partner school building to connect students and families with supportive adults and community resources. They say the staff focus on academic achievement, learning loss, absenteeism, and graduation rates.

“I applaud these 14 school districts from all across Michigan,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice. “Their efforts and our partnership with Communities In Schools mean children in participating school districts will experience improved outcomes. With support in reading, math, and other areas, students will be better positioned to graduate from high school and achieve their life dreams.”

Benton Harbor is on the list to receive nearly $374 thousand dollars.

Schools Superintendent Dr. Kelvin Butts says, “This initiative will empower our students and educators, fostering environments where learning and growth thrive.”
