The Niles Police Department on Monday responded to the Popeyes Chicken at 306 S 11th Street on the report of an armed robbery.
Police say they received the call at approximately 4:30 pm. When officers arrived, the suspect, a younger white male, had already left the scene with at least three other individuals.
Witnesses say the suspect entered the restaurant, walked to the employee area behind the counter, and brandished a knife while demanding money. A male employee reportedly confronted the suspect and a physical altercation ensued. The employee was reportedly cut by the suspect’s knife and sustained non-life threatening injuries.
Police say thanks to a tip, they quickly located the suspect and the involved vehicle in the 2500 block of Juniper Road in Niles. The suspect, a juvenile, was arrested and has been charged with armed robbery.
“We are relieved that no one was seriously injured during this robbery attempt and that we were able to apprehend the suspect quickly. The Niles Police Department commends the bravery of the Popeyes employees and thanks the community for their vigilance and assistance in providing information that led to the suspect’s arrest.”
The suspect is currently being held at the Berrien County Juvenile Center awaiting further proceedings.
