The Berrien County Board of Commissioners has accepted a $90,000 donation for Berrien County Animal Control.
Animal Control shelter manager Ashley Herr tells us the gift comes from Marie Volpe and her family.
“We are putting a decent amount of it towards spay and neuter because that is a resource that we usually run short on funds,” Herr said. “We are always looking for ways to help supplement getting everything spayed and neutered that comes to our facility, but it’s also going to help with a lot of our emergencies that we have come in. So, dogs who have broken legs or need a little bit of extra care.”
This donation came just weeks after Animal Control was given a van by the Friends of Berrien County Animal Control. Herr says the department has gotten a lot of generous support.
“It’s fabulous. We are so excited that people are taking note of what we’re doing and the fact that we’re being so supported. It just feels great that we know that people are noticing that we are trying to do the best we can for them.”
Herr says Volpe is a “wonderful Berrien County resident” who has made donations in the past, although none this large. Volpe said she wanted to support Berrien County Animal Control for the sake of the animals.
Meanwhile, Herr says the shelter currently has more than 80 dogs after getting several new arrivals recently. Anyone who wants to adopt should give it a call.
