Children in Michigan aren’t required to enroll in kindergarten, but a new bill would change that.
The legislation, authored by state Senator Dayna Polehanki of Livonia, would mandate that all children ages five and above attend kindergarten.
Polehanki says early childhood education sets kids up for a lifetime of success.
“I believe and the research says that there is no greater step toward academic achievement than this as nothing compares to early education in terms of setting kids up for a lifetime of success,” Polehanki said. “Because we are moving toward universal preschool, it doesn’t make sense that kids skip kindergarten.”
Governor Gretchen Whitmer is looking for state funding for universal preschool for all 4-year-olds.
