
Pilot Edward “Daniel” Murphy, 50, of Oakland Park, Fl., passed away heroically in a plane crash in Naples, Fl. on Friday, February 9, 2024. Daniel’s courageous actions, while facing a dire emergency landing, exemplified his selflessness and bravery. His quick reactions helped save the lives of the cabin attendant, passengers, and countless drivers on I-75.
Family, friends, and others whose lives Daniel touched are invited to share a toast, fond memories and stories, while paying tribute to his Irish heritage, 2-6 p.m. on Saint Patrick’s Day, Sunday, March 17 at the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 96, 2665 Niles Rd, St. Joseph, Michigan.
Daniel was born September 26, 1973, in Benton Harbor, Mi. and was a 1992 graduate of Bridgman High School. At a young age Daniel drew pictures of helicopters on his bedroom ceiling, telling his parents he was disappointed he didn’t have wings. He pursued his dream of becoming an aviator with unwavering determination. Starting his career flying helicopters at a South Florida flight school while working at Hop-A-Jet Worldwide in his twenties, Daniel began humbly working line service and scrubbing floors. And through nearly 30 years of hard work and dedication, he rose to become a captain of the largest aircraft in the Hop-A-Jet charter fleet.
A very accomplished pilot, Daniel flew a variety of aircraft, logging over 13,300 hours of aviation experience, showcasing his versatility and skill in the cockpit. He had the privilege of flying several famous athletes, musicians and celebrities including, Shaquille O’Neal, Sylvester Stallone, and Harrison Ford, whom he personally taught how to master hovering in a helicopter.
Daniel was not only a dedicated aviator but also a member of Mensa, an international high IQ society, showcasing his intellectual prowess and curiosity. During his time off, he could be found cheering on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team alongside his beloved cat, Harvey Sue, while indulging in hot wings loaded with Tabasco sauce. Daniel was full of energy and kindness, always offering support to those in need. He was a beloved son, brother, uncle, nephew, friend, and professional who touched the lives of many.
Left to honor Daniel is his mother, Penelope Lee Murphy (Ed Aho); father, Edward “Dennis” Murphy; maternal uncles Mike (Sharon) and David (Peggie) Chance; paternal aunt, Therese Murphy Wallis; sister-in-law, Stefanie Murphy; niece, Madison Murphy; special cousins, Amber (Nick) Grooms; and a host of other relatives.
Daniel was preceded in death by his older brother and best friend Stephen Murphy (2013); stepmother Anna Murphy (2020); maternal grandparents Fay and Lee Chance; and paternal grandparents, Thelma and Stephen Murphy.
