You don’t normally see big cats in Michigan, but that’s just what a Houghton man caught on trail cam video from deer hunting season.
24-year-old Eli Schaefer was checking out his trail cam within the past couple of weeks and saw a photo of a cougar. Not only that, but it captured footage of the cougar taking down a deer.
“I’ve never really thought about cougars being in the area,” Schaefer said. “I’ve never even really paid attention. Other people post pictures, but it’s a way different feeling looking on your camera and seeing one standing right where you do. Then you start thinking about how many times was the cougar watching me walking around the woods?”
Schaefer says the DNR contacted him and plans to go to the site and verify the video.
There have been about 106 confirmed cougar sightings in the state since 2008.
