Corewell Health says expect longer wait times due to rising respiratory illnesses

If you’re planning a visit to the doctor, you might experience a longer-than-normal wait time. That’s because, according to Corewell Health officials, the rising number of respiratory illnesses is putting them near capacity.

Dr. C.J. Gibson, Vice President of Medical Affairs for Corewell Health for West Michigan, said Corewell’s facilities are seeing a significant increase in patients with respiratory viruses, resulting in longer wait times at urgent care centers, walk-in clinics, primary care offices and emergency departments throughout the state.

Dr. Gibson said they’re not yet seeing the levels seen during the height of the pandemic, but cases are heading that direction.

“I would say that it’s pushing us up toward those capacity type levels where we start re-evaluating how we deliver care in certain areas. As you can imagine, having that many people in the hospital at once, it makes it more difficult to do the things that we’re usually doing.”

Despite the rise in respiratory illness, Corewell officials are not reimplementing a mask mandate and there is no move to limit visits by the family members of patients, Dr. Gibson said

“We encourage people to please be patient during this busy time and choose the right place to seek care,” said Gibson. “Make sure your symptoms match your care setting. For example, patients with mild cold and flu symptoms should choose a virtual option or walk-in clinic. Those with more serious illness, like shortness of breath, persistent fever, dehydration or inability to get out of bed, should visit an urgent care or emergency department.”

Health officials say the best, first line of defense against catching or spreading respiratory diseases is to wash your hands regularly. Officials also encourage people to get the flu and covid vaccines to reduce their risk of catching the illness and reduce the risk of hospitalization if they do get sick.
