An Elkhart, Indiana man is in custody following a chase with police in Berrien and Cass counties over the weekend.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Department says its deputies were notified that the Niles Police Department and the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department were in pursuit of a vehicle that was heading into Cass County. As the chase went into Cass County, sheriff’s deputies from there joined in, pursuing the vehicle northbound on M-60 near Yankee Street.

The chase continued into Cassopolis, where the Cassopolis Police Department deployed stop sticks, which damaged the fleeing vehicle’s tires. It crashed behind a home on Lakeview Drive in Penn Township.

The 41-year-old male driver was the only occupant of the vehicle, and he was taken into custody and turned over to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department.

The incident remains under investigation, and police say it appears alcohol and drugs were factors.
