Recall language against Buchanan Mayor rejected; new language submitted

The Berrien County Election Commission has rejected recall language filed against Buchanan Mayor Sean Denison.

The commission held a meeting Monday and found the petition language filed by residents Carla Johnson and Monroe Lemay was not clear enough for a recall effort to proceed. The petition filed last month said Denison should be removed from office because he “suspended Benjamin Eldridge as the Buchanan City Manager.” Eldridge has since resigned.

The Berrien County Clerk’s office tells us new recall language has already been filed by the same two petitioners. The new language says “City Commissioner Sean Denison suspended Benjamin Eldridge as the Buchanan City Manager.”

A clarity hearing on the new language has been scheduled for December 18.

Meanwhile, three recall petitions have also been filed against City Commissioner Dan Vigansky. They accuse him of referring to minorities as “you people” and retaliating against female city employees over their complaints about the former city manager. The petitions were filed by resident Jacob Brown.

A clarity hearing over the language filed against Vigansky is also scheduled for December 18.
